Hello Diane,
Just wanted to touch base. Kane and Koda have been out quite a bit – every night after school! It is a blast watching her do her thing. She is amazing and has great stamina; she is on the hunt the whole time we are out. She brings in every little antler she comes across. She has found a lot of deer sheds. Today we decided to go look for elk sheds. We went to a spot we knew should have some sheds. We looked in our regular spots; openings and near tree line. No success. We then went into the woods trying to find where they may have bedded down. Sure enough, Koda found three antlers! It was neat watching her. She couldn’t carry one of the antlers because of the downfall but was persistent in trying to get it to us. She is an amazing dog! Please find attached an elk antler she found today.
We are learning how to “read” Koda when she knows an antler is in the area and give her time to search.
Thanks again!
Ray Hess
Last night Koda found the match to antler she found last week. The antlers were 152 feet apart. Kane was watching her on his GPS and she went to where the antler was 3 times, so he walked over and she took him to it.
Kane is learning to read Koda and pay attention to her tendencies. This is a shed Koda found and her largest so far. They are out right now trying to find the match.
I am impressed with her!
Update on KODA (2018)
Hey it’s Koda and Kane in Montana.
The shed season went very well and we are still going out looking. Koda is doing absolutely fantastic. She absolutely hammered the whitetails this year. She has found three years off the same buck but only the left sides. She keeps impressing me with how motivated she is to find antlers.
During February she found a shed that was under the snow and a tree had fallen ohunting n it. She couldn’t get it and she kept after it, after a bit I finally went over and used a hand saw to cut it out. Its amazing to watch her search I’ve learned her behavior when she’s found one and usually I’m able to video it.
There had been countless times where I’ll be looking thought the binos and that awesome sound of and antler dropping at my feet. She’s very calm when riding on the snowmobiles and 4 wheelers with you.
There were countless times where we were walking out at dark and Koda was still adding weight to the pack. Also she’s a great tracker. I hit a coyote and we were on it’s tracks for about a mile until It went into private.
She is an absolute great all around dog. Koda is very friendly and my 3 year old cousin can play with an antler, it entertains him for hours. When I go fishing Koda either sits on the bank patiently or is right next to me. She loves the water and snow even more. I can’t wait to see what she’ll turn up next year.
Thanks again for the incredible dog!!!
